Throwback Thursday: Kristen Stewart in less complicated days

130523-KStew-Eddie-Redmayne

We're all about having some flashback fun here at MSN Canada, which means TBT is right up our ally!

Our inaugural post finds a 2008-era Kristen Stewart - before the Twihards, the RPatz, the SWATH scandal, etc - with then boyfriend Michael Angarano (yep, the kid who played Jack Macfarlane's teenaged son on Will & Grace) and everyone's favourite Brit hunk from Les Miserables, Eddie Redmayne, all hanging out at Sundance.

Don't they all look so fresh-faced and adorably uncorrupted by fame? Say it with us now: awwwwww.

Glee-cap: Regionals brings a lot of resolution but no real satisfaction

2008__625x0_glee-season-4-episode-22-all-or-nothing-2

Alright Gleeks, I read you loud and clear. I got the message at last week's Tina-vention and I'm ready to ease up. Plus, as you reminded me, I should really just blame the writers and Ryan Murphy for making her an insufferable caricature of her former self. And thus, I will try my very best to tone down the Tina disses (but hey, I'm not stopping cold turkey - it can't be done). I will not, however, stop railing against the Babs/Berry comparisons. I've been opposed to this since day one and after four years, it's fed Lea Michele's ego too much. Too much, I say!

So here we are with New Directions at Regionals and the season finale. And much like my sister last weekend, you're probably going "but the school year isn't over so how does the season get to end?!" This is a clever ruse by Murphy and his gang to keep the outgoing McKinley seniors in play for yet another season. But before we get ahead of ourselves with season five predictions, let's rose and thorn it up while saying goodbye for the summer:

Glee-cap: Everything's (almost) (kinda) (not really) Wonder-ful

130503-glee-wonderful

Guest stars galore again this week on Glee! And, based on the rest of the recap, they were mostly unwanted...by me at least. Also, I forsook (foresaked? foresakened?) the third period of my Habs first playoff game of 2013 just to watch and recap this beautiful mess of a show. Yes, I'm not just fluff and sparkles. There are sports facts rattling around in this hollow head. (And FYI, the Habs fell apart in the third period and lost - so it might have been Glee's fault). ANYWAY, onto the roses and thorns - and also, please hit the comments and add your own should you feel so inspired!

Glee-cap: New Directions gets unplugged and New York gets SJP back

130426-glee-lights-out

Somewhere amongst all the 24-hour news cycle coverage of the tragedy in Boston, Fox managed to slip in an announcement: Glee will be back for another TWO seasons. No word on exactly where those two seasons will focus - McKinley? New York? - but perhaps the May 9 finale will set us up for all that jazz. E! Online reported that the finale includes two "Hollywood legends" (if it's Lilo and Perez Hilton again, I swear I'll....grrr.) and a big proposal (my money - and yours - should be on on Finn and Rachel).

Anyway, we're getting off track here! Last night we saw the kids of McKinley unplugged, and that's really when they're at their best, isn't it? Also, some big reveals! All done well! Could the writers be trying to win me back?? I think so. On to the roses and thorns:

Glee-cap: A "traditional" college experience and Marley's transition into Taylor Swift

Glee

The question that constantly runs through my head when watching Rachel Berry on this show remains: is Lea Michele using Glee to try and script her future? Sometimes it really seems that way. Anyway! This week, we can at least thank the powers that be for letting Glee go back to its fluffy superficial self with little more than a brief reference to last week's dramatics.

Hello! Sorry we've been on the sporadic side of things lately: we've been hit with the technical difficulties bat and have been trying to recover. It hasn't been going well. Anyway, we're pretty sure things have been ironed out with a nice pleat in them and the proof is in the product below. Enjoy!

Spotlight Saturday: There's no crying in baseball!

130412-league-of-their-own

No, alas, A League of Their Own, is NOT back in theatres (because obviously we'd be clutching a large popcorn watching Geena Davis block homeplate if that were the case), but 42 did open this weekend. And so it's in honour of the Jackie Robinson biopic that we look at the best baseball flicks of all time.

You know what's also in theatres this weekend, Ryan Gosling's latest The Place Beyond the Pines. And since the actor has insisted on going on a leave of absense for awhile (boo!), you'll definitely want to read our interview with Baby Goose. Also, why not click through this gallery of sensitive bad boys. Sigh...Where were we again!?

In other news, Glee tried to make a statement about gun violence and school shootings and, well, failed. Miserably. At least we think so. Read the recap here and let us know what you think!

AND the MTV Movie Awards are this weekend! We're going to be live tweeting it right here, so come on back Sunday, Apr. 14 at 8:30 p.m., ET, and chat! Rebel Wilson's hosting. There'll be the first teaser for Catching Fire as well as new and exclusive Iron Man 3 footage. AND Peter Dinklage and Will Ferrell seem to have teamed up to do something. WE DON'T EVEN KNOW AND WE'RE REALLY EXCITED.

Glee-cap: 'Shooting Star' misses the mark and creates chaos

130411-Glee-Shooting-Star

Well, Glee finally found a place it really had no business being. Instead of giving us the usual dose of pop covers and weak jokes, Ryan Murphy and his band of merry men tried to take a stance on school shootings. And wow did they do a piss poor job of it. Did they pay tribute to those who’ve suffered through (and died) in a school shooting? No. Did they give the world a public service announcement on what to do should you find yourself in a scenario with an active shooter? Nope. In fact, they trivialized it and gave kids the WORST POSSIBLE guidelines for what to do in that kind of situation. Please, Glee, try not to abuse your position of power and influence again with this kind of thing. You’re only doing more harm. On to the thorns, because there are very very very few roses...

Spotlight Saturday: Easter eggs and celebrity babies

7BD6A4BD7C72CDFFFBD98A02554C2_h498_w598_m2

Happy long weekend celebrating the patron saint of chocolate! Is the Easter Bunny delivering babies these days? Does the stork take the holiday weekends off? Hurt Locker actor Jeremy Renner became a first time dad on Good Friday. Additional Veronica Mars sweetheart Kristen Bell gave birth to a baby girl - proud papa Dax Sheperd announced the arrival on Twitter (like all good celebs do these days), saying, "Lincoln Bell Shepard is here. She has mom's beauty and dad's obsession with breasts. Hooray!" Everyone say it with me now: awwwwww.

As far as Easter's concerned, we've put a lovely entertainment-based spin on it and are helping you to find the Easter Eggs in movies. We also have our monthly movie guide to help you plan your April flicks. And if you're really a traditionalist this holiday weekend, here's a video of egg decorating tips. (Does anyone still decorate eggs these days?)

One major PVR alert for you, while you're dazed and surrounded by foil pieces from chocolate eggs and bunnies on Sunday night: GAME OF THRONES IS BACK.

Spotlight Saturday: More music from Justin Timberlake, Fallon vs. Leno and more links

130322-JT

Greetings all! There's a lot of ground to cover this week, so stay with us and let's just get down to business about the week in pop culture.

Justin Timberlake debuted a (lengthy) video for his song "Mirrors" but more importantly, he confirmed a second album is coming soon. John Mayer's taking a break from dating famous women to go on tour - the first tour in three years. Prince annouced four shows in Vancouver as part of his west coast tour. And Avril Lavigne teased fans with part of a new single.

Ellen DeGeneres announced she's taking her show down under (yes, that's Australia), the bigger TV rumours are about Jimmy Fallon taking over for Jay Leno on The Tonight Show. AND possibly moving it all back to the city that never sleeps, New York, New York. What do you think about Fallon taking over?

Romance in Hollywood is always a difficult thing. This week alone saw Seth MacFarlane and Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke split, RPatz and KStew rekindling their love over karaoke and two Mad Men stars getting engaged. Tiger Woods made it Facebook official with Lindsey Vonn. Katy Perry and John Mayer broke up for a second time. And Ryan Seacrest and Julianne Hough also split up.

Meanwhile, out in that vast world of Internet, we dug up the following links to pique your interest:

Glee-cap: Genuinely awesome or guilty pleasure?

130322-Glee-Spice-Girls

“Guilty Pleasures” is basically the entire contents of my iPod (actually with 10,000+ songs, some probably are legitimate tunes) so you can only imagine the enthusiam I had going into a Glee episode that included songs from Wham! and the Spice Girls. Then, I started to worry that this show would make me feel badly about indulging in the cheesiest of songs, movies and more. Joke’s on them: I own my terrible taste in music. In the end, it’d just be a case of the pot calling the kettle black because we all know the guiltiest pleasure of all is enjoying an episode of Glee. And with all the roses up in here, there was a lot of indulgence:

We Have No Friends: The Podcast Episode 18: Girls, Parks and Rec, Veronica Mars and more

Parks-and-rec
This one is a super-sized edition of the podcast, folks. There was a lot to talk about this week: Girls (season two finale), Parks and Recreation (was awesome), cable providers (not cool), Top Chef Canada (was on), Big Brother Canada (people cheated), that whole Veronica Mars/Kickstarter gamechanger and -- believe it or not -- more! We even manage to discuss the current culinary landscape of Toronto if you don't mind. Please listen below.

Bee-doh, bee-doh, bee-doh: Despicable Me 2 trailer fiiiiinally lands

130319-Despicable-Me2

Those of you in Western Canada are lucky enough to not be experiencing the extra dose of winter currently plaguing those of us in Toronto, Montreal and everywhere in between, so perhaps your day didn't need brightening. But mine did. And you know what can brighten anyone's day? MINIONS. Especially ones set to a backing track of some classic Eminem (seriously that song is from over a decade ago - terrifying).

For months and months we had only a teaser trailer or two to live off of and bring us joy. But we cannot live on minions alone! Now, we finally have proof Gru's back - and it appears he's no longer a villain.

Spotlight Saturday: Veronica Mars is BACK, new Bon Jovi music and more links

130315-Veronica-Mars

If you haven't heard the Veronica Mars movie news, you've either a) been hiding in a cave or b) never watched the show in the first place. (Shame on you if you answered "b." SHAME!) Basically, Rob Thomas (not the one from Matchbox 20) and some of the cast decided to ask the fans to fund the movie project they've all been dying to make. And it worked! The Kickstarter fundraising campaign exploded, raising over $2 millon in 11 hours. Insanity.

While we're on the subject of vintage TV casts we love, we tracked down the cast of Saved By The Bell to check up on their current careers. As far as Zack and Kelly go, they're doing surprisingly well for two former TNBC sitcom stars.

Also this week, Bon Jovi released a new album, which lead us to tally the ways the band has changed the world. We also have a great interview with Richie Sambora! And speaking of interesting chats with charismatic musicians, we also spoke to Josh Groban about his duet with friend Sarah Brightman amongst other things.

And now that we've debriefed you, why not hit play on our weekly podcast and peruse this round-up of links that we've collected over the past five days for your enjoyment:

Glee-cap: Wherein Mr. Shue's in the right and yet still an unsympathetic character

130315-Glee-Feuds

FEUDS! The Glee promo released earlier in the week with Matthew Morrison and Cory Monteith doing a boy band mashup secured this episode a win before I even saw it. How can you go wrong with 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys? Short answer: You can't. Anyway, at the end of the day not all the beef was squashed or hugged out, which is kind of true to life so....well done there, Glee. But don't think you're getting off that easy! Save the teens! Why the CW needs The Carrie Diaries for another season (or two)

Cast

It was around this time last year when I made the pitch as to why Hart of Dixie deserved a second season (by the way, it could use a third one if you're listening, CW execs!), so it just feels right that once again, I'm laying down the law on why The Carrie Diaries deserves the same this time around....

Spotlight Saturday: Mila's PR coup, Bieber's rough week and more

28CFAFCDCBA9D918AD068F84F7652

Are you off to see the wizard this weekend? Oz The Great and Powerful will be visually stunning, no doubt, but will James Franco charm you? The ladies of the film - Michelle, Mila and Rachel - are a great starting line of witchy talent. So, it's in their honour that we look at pop culture's witches: the good, the bad and the ugly. We also decided to round up those famous movie artifacts we wish were real (*cough* ruby slippers *cough*).

In upcoming movies, Hangover 3's poster hit the internet (very Harry Potter meets Voldemort) but we're more obsessed with the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 trailer - check it all out on this week's Trailer Park.

Across the pond, Bieber suffered from shortness of breath and anger at paparazzi. He pulled off his final London concert but only after he was snapped in a rage.

And across the Internet, there was a host of craziness:

Glee-cap: Movie mash-ups and the show's 500th song

Glee-footloose

Can you believe that Glee's actually covered FIVE HUNDRED SONGS? (Okay, they had a couple original tunes in there too, but still! 500!) Hope the two week hiatus was enough to get everyone sufficiently amped. And there's just so many storylines brewing after Valentine's Day: the Blake-Marley-Jake love triangle, Berry's pregnancy scare, the mystery of Brody! Oh sure, Shue and Emma and Finn's whole thing too. Can the Glee writers to a bang up, rose-worthy job or will it be thorns and more thorns? Let's get to the recap:

Spotlight Saturday: DWTS cast news, Jennifer Lawrence at the Oscars and some good gossip

130225-JLaw-VanityFair

Huzzah! The grey of February is over and spring is on the way. Okay, it may not feel like that in all parts of the country, but the calendar says March and so we're taking this stance. Full disclosure, now that awards season officially over, we're a little adrift and lost this week. (Although Jennifer Lawrence seems pumped that she can now kick back and relax. Maybe a little too relaxed?)

In TV news, ABC announced their season 16 cast of Dancing With the Stars. The first houseguest was kicked off on Big Brother Canada. ABC Spark's Switched at Birth is going silent next week, and everyone should watch it because the show is basically flawless.

In honour of 21 and Over opening this weekend, we rounded up all the movie parties we would totally crash if they were real. We also have a giant March movie preview so you can plan out your whole month's worth of movie viewing.

Lastly, all Tim McGraw fans click here for a chance to win a autographed guitar (and his new album).

Hrmmm...seems that February's ended with a bit of a whimper. Next week we'll be back with our podcast, Glee-caps (because we'll finally have a new episode of Glee to watch), and so much more. For now, here's the round-up of interesting Internet thinga-ma-jigs and whatcha-ma-call-its:

Bonus bon mots: Talking to Nikita actor Dillon Casey

130301-Dillon-Casey
Denise Grant

Sean Pierce may be a serious (former) Navy Seal, but Nikita's Dillon Casey is a laidback barrel of laughs. The Canadian actor spent some time chatting with TV editor, Joan Porter - which you can read about here - and there were too many bon mots to not post (and you know, Glee was a rerun so we had some extra time and space here). And so without further ado, we present more minutes from this week's interview with Casey:

Spotlight Saturday: Oscars, Oscars and Megan Fox might ruin our childhood memories

  130222-Megan-Fox

Okay, that may be a little harsh, but all the rumours of Megan Fox playing April O'Neil in Michael Bay's remake of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has us a little...shall we say, tense? Moving on!

This weekend (and Monday morning) will be dominated of chat of the 85th Academy Awards. We talked ad nauseum about all things Oscars on our podcast earlier this week. And man, will we be gabbing away on Sunday night on our live blog.

If you're heading out to a party but feel your knowledge around this year's flicks is a little light, you're going to want our cheat sheet. Or learn how to pronounce Quvenzhane's name (she's the youngest Best Actress nominee in history now). To round out your knowledge, fake indignation about this year's nominees by seeing who got snubbed. Also, fans of graphs will love Vulture's pie charts about the nominated movies. For a little history lesson, here are the best moments in the Academy Awards' long and storied past. Lastly, here are a bunch of actors that will never win an Oscar. Sorry, Jessica Simpson.

Spotlight Saturday: A tolerable episode of Girls AND the return of Charlie Sheen

130214-Girls

Don't call it a comeback...oh wait, do! Charlie Sheen - he of Tiger Blood and winning and Anger Management - is back on the silver screen. Although technically A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III only opened in select cities this weekend. Still, it's enough of an excuse to look back at some of the best movie comebacks of all time (although there's a glaringly obvious Robert Downey Jr. missing from that list).

Also in theatres now? A FIFTH Die Hard flick. Hard to believe that Bruce Willis' John McClane is still going strong. And this time with the next generation, his son! So, it's in honour of that that we look at film's favourite father-son duos.

In TV, Downton Abbey's third season finale airs tomorrow - this season's been quite the rollercoaster and the last episode still will knock you for a loop. Don't watch the PBS smash show? Don't worry, neither does Maggie Smith...and she's in it.

The CW grants early renewal to Arrow, Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries

121016-Amell-Arrow

The CW announced early pick-ups for three of its series -  Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries and Arrow - on Monday.

Freshman series Arrow, starring Canadian actor Stephen Amell, premiered this fall and gave the network its best series premiere since 2009.

“We said last year that one of our goals was to establish building blocks to grow on, and now with our new hit Arrow and fan favorite Supernatural on Wednesday night, and the continued success of The Vampire Diaries on Thursday, we’ve been able to do that,” network president Mark Pedowitz said in a statement.

Spotlight Saturday: Boy Meets World flashbacks, True American rules and Tim Horton's TV-inspired donut

130209-boy-meets-world

This week we did the world a great service and tracked down the cast of Boy Meets World to see what they'd been up to since their TGIF TV domination. The best news about there 2013 whereabouts is that many of them have signed up for the reboot/reimagination of their show, Girl Meets World, which will feature Cory and Topanga's daughter. Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel are really excited about it, naturally.

In other TV news, we talked to Katie Cassidy this week about Arrow, and her eventual (inevitable?) transition to Black Canary. And with The Walking Dead returning on Sunday, we've got interviews with Norman Reedus (aka Darryl Dixon) and The Govenor himself, David Morrissey, who was quite amusing on the subject of learning to act with an eye patch.

Big weekend for music with the Grammy Awards this Sunday. The Lumineers will be among those performing, which is great because who hasn't had "Ho Hey" stuck in their head in recent months. Also, Rihanna and Chris Brown take two. Eeps! We're looking at potential Grammy dramas that could unfold.

And there's been a lot of other hilarity around the Internet this week:

Glee-cap: Diva showdowns and more awkward moments than necessary

130208-Glee

This week's "Diva" episode saw the rise - and fall - of divas, which leads me to ask: did we really need to crown a queen of the divas? I think not. What I do know is this week it was Kurt and Rachel I wanted to heap roses on top of, while turning my back on McKinley and all the truly uncomfortable moments those people gave us. Saturday Spotlight: Tegan and Sara, New Girl's kiss, and Jennifer Lawrence's wardrobe malfunction

004-New-Girl

There's a lot that goes on each week on the Internet. So we've rounded up some of our favourite links from our site and others that we've deemed required reading and/or viewing:

First off, we talked to Calgary's Tegan and Sara about their new album Heartthrob. They're hoping the album, which features more radio-friendly pop music, will grow their touring career. And while we're talking about Canadian music, we've got 15 homegrown acts you should know about.

Remember Jennifer Lawrence’s weird wardrobe malfunction at the SAG Awards? She’s got an explanation (and she’s cringing about the whole thing). Also, she remains the best late night interview of them all this awards season AND can rock a mustard yellow dress. We're jealous.

Felicity star Keri Russell has returned to TV and she's really in love with her new Russian spy drama, The Americans.

While we're talking TV, COMMUNITY IS FINALLY BACK NEXT WEEK!!! Obviously it made our What to Watch list.

Glee-cap: A gratuitous - but delightful - trip to the gun show

  130201-Glee-naked

When you title an episode “Naked,” you’ve already given most people a reason to pull up a couch, grab a stack of dollar bills and make it rain in their living rooms. So colour us surprised that in addition to wanton shirtlessness, this week’s episode also addressed the less-talked-about men’s body issues and insecurities (thanks Artie and Sam!) as well as reinforcing supportive male friendships. After a month-long hiatus, Glee has returned. And with it, it's brought anti-feminist sentiment, an increasingly unlikeable Tina Cohen-Chang and a ridiculous doping sub-plot. Glee-wind: Looking back at 2012's best (and worst) songs

121227-Gleewind3b

Are you going through Glee withdrawal yet? The winter premiere is scheduled for Jan. 24, so you’ve still got a few weeks to go, BUT I’m here to help you remember the good, the bad and the ugly that came out of Glee during 2012. So until 2013’s run of roses and thorns, here are the superlatives I’m prepared to dish out before I ring in the New Year:

Glee-cap: Multiple storylines does not a Love, Actually episode make

  121214-Glee-Actually

It's that time of year again: fall finale season. And I do have a few notes for the writers for 2013, namely to rewatch Love, Actually because this week's episode was not exactly the Glee version of it. I have to admit I'm a little ambivalent about about the winter break. I can also tell you that “Feliz Navidad” will probably be stuck in my head for DAYS, so thanks for that Glee. In return, I give you some roses, thorns and wish you a happy holiday season:

Gossip Girl Live-cap: Our thoughts on the final season

Picture 1

It's true. The end of days is upon us: those loveable schemers from the Upper East Side have just a few short episodes to hook-up, break-up and make-up as The CW's Gossip Girl enters its final season. Will we find out who the notorious gossip blogger really is? Will Chuck and Blair finally end up happily ever after? Will Serena ever wear a turtleneck? (No.) Will Nate get a clue? (Unlikely.) And can Dan's hair become any more ridiculous? (Signs point to yes.)

As you can see there are many questions that need answering and only a few more episodes to go. MSN Entertainment editors Joan and Jeevan are here to comment, critique wardrobe, discuss every nuance, and occasionally recap the final episodes right here for your entertainment. Follow along live each week at 9 p.m., ET, or stop by later on to read up on their thoughts from the pivotal hour of TV:

Saturday Spotlight: Grammy noms, rom-com lessons and a little baby news

  121207-Proposal

Looking back at the week in entertainment, I can't help but think it's been a slow week. I blame the upcoming holidays. And the fact that the week started off with a bang...in the form of Kate Middleton's big baby news. If you haven't heard that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting, well then, I can't help you catch up - you're just that far behind. (Kate's since been discharged from the hospital, so I guess the morning sickness has subsided.)

Glee-cap: The return of Rachel (and her face) and the end of New Directions?

  121207-glee-swan-song

With a major Sectionals faux pas in their rear view mirror, the New Directions kids spent the week looking for new directions. (Sorry, I've been wanting to say that for a while. It's totally cheeseball.) Meanwhile in NYC, Kurt and Rachel finally get their own opportunities to shine while they belt out a tune - as opposed to faux Kiki'ing with Sarah Jessica Parker - and all is right with the world. Mostly...except for that whole glee club disbanding and no longer having purpose... Oh dear. To the roses and thorns!
