Trailer Park Super Bowl special

Geekwatch_Superbowl

Forget the on-field action, the power outage or even Beyonce’s explosive half-time show; everyone knows the real reason to watch the Super Bowl is the film trailers. With millions of eyes glued to their screens Hollywood traditionally spends a small fortune ensuring we all get a glimpse of their next big blockbusters. This year was no different, and with spots for everything from The Lone Ranger to Iron Man 3 the Super Bowl served up a smattering of teasers for some of the year’s biggest films.

But who did it best? Join us as we run the rule over the contenders in this Trailer Park Super Bowl special.

Star Trek Into Darkness
Before he sets off to a galaxy far far away to take up directing duties on Disney’s Star Wars sequel, J.J. Abrams’ has another iconic franchise to attend to with Star Trek Into Darkness. A follow up to his hit 2009 reboot, the movie once again stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Bruce Greenwood as the crew of the Enterprise. They’re joined by Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch who plays the mysterious villain John Harrison. There’s action aplenty in this 30-second spot with a spectacular scene of the Enterprise itself crash landing, but it’s Cuberbatch’s villain who really steals the show with some deliciously villainous dialogue: “I am better.” “At what?” “Everything!” is his bold claim, and based on the evidence we’ve seen so far, it’s hard to argue with him.

The Lone Ranger
Disney’s update on the iconic American hero has been troubled to say the least. With filming delays, script rewrites and soaring production costs, The Lone Ranger has started to look like another John Carter shaped disaster for the House of Mouse. Starring Armie Hammer as the titular Texas Ranger and Johnny Depp as his Native American sidekick Tonto, the movie’s the brainchild of the team behind the smash hit Pirates of the Caribbean series. Like Pirates, The Lone Ranger looks every inch the bombastic blockbuster, a western that looks like it follows in the footsteps of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes with its period trappings. There’s also plenty of buddy comedy between its two principal characters whose relationship looks like it’s going to be one of the movie’s mainstays, alongside plenty of gun toting train wrecking action sequences. It’s a decent enough teaser, and whilst it doesn’t exactly give up what the movie’s going to be about, there’s still plenty of action, excitement and Johnny Depp to whet people’s appetites ahead of its summer release.

Iron Man 3
Perhaps the best spot from Super Bowl Sunday was the latest look at Marvel’s upcoming threequel Iron Man 3. With a playful introduction from Robert Downey Jr. the sneak peek served up a familiar cocktail of armour clad action and pithy comedy. A lot of the footage was recycled from the latest trailer but the spot did give us another look at Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin alongside a quick glance at Rhodey in his new War Machine get up. We also got a look at a spectacular set piece involving Air Force One; a taster of the type of action we can expect when Iron Man 3 touches down on May 1st.

Fast & Furious 6
The Fast & Furious franchise has never been particularly highbrow, after all there’s not really any substance to a series of movies that revolve around fast cars, buff blokes and scantily clad women. So it’s good to see that the Super Bowl spot didn’t pretend to sell us anything than a big silly action movie that Fast & Furious 6 will inevitably turn out to be. All of the old gang are back behind the wheel for a barely plausible plot that sees them teaming up to take down Luke Evans’ gravelly voiced villain in a bid to earn their freedom. But of course it’s the hardware that anyone’s really interested in and by the looks of things there will be plenty to keep petrol heads happy, with a little bit of military hardware thrown in for good measure too.

World War Z
There’s nothing really new to see in the latest teaser for World War Z. Aside from reiterating the plot and giving Brad Pitt’s hero plenty of screen time it looks like the studio are trying to keep things under wraps ahead of this summer’s release. It’s not likely to be good news for the fans that have grown increasingly concerned about Marc Forster‘s adaptation of the Max Brooks novel of the same name. The action revolves around Pitt’s character Gerry lane, a United Nations expert who’s drafted in to help stem a Zombie pandemic that’s broken out across the globe. Brooks’ novel was an intriguing look at the political, economic and social ramifications any outbreak would have; but by the looks of this trailer all of that has been set aside in favour of a good old-fashioned end of the world scenario. That might not necessarily be a bad thing of course, especially if some of the more spectacular special effects we get to see in this trailer look as good on the big screen as they do on TV. But we’re still not sold on the movie however, so we’ll have to wait until June 21st to see if World War Z delivers.

Oz The Great and Powerful
There’s not much in the way of fresh footage for Disney’s Oz The Great and Powerful, but it’s still one of the scene-stealers from yesterday’s Super Bowl coverage. Directed by Sam Raimi the movie looks back at the origins of the much loved magician from L. Frank Baum’s children’s tale and tells the story of how the small time circus act came to save Oz. There’s plenty of colourful eye catching action on display alongside a good number of nods in the direction of its legendary 1939 forebear. But the best bits are reserved for the movie’s three witches, played by Mila Kunis, Evanora Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams alongside the flying monkeys that look sure to terrify a whole new generation of film fans.
