Saturday spotlight: The Hobbit, Star Trek, Golden Globe noms and more
So, I’m not quite sure if you were aware, but there’s this
little movie opening this weekend…it’s called The Hobbit. Have you heard of it? Hehe… We’ve been on Hobbit-overdrive here this week,
bringing a fresh batch of special features, including interviews with the stars
(including Ian
McKellen, Andy
Serkis and Richard
Armitage) and writer/director Peter
Jackson. If you haven’t read any of Tolkien’s books or you need a refresher
(after all, Lord of the Rings: The Return
of the King came out almost ten years ago), Emma’s got a handy character
guide to set you straight.
If you still haven’t planned your vacation yet for the holidays, may we suggest that you take a look at Daniel’s travel guide to Middle Earth… If Middle Earth isn’t your thing, Emma’s got you covered with a bunch of other fairytale lands that are much easier to access. Okay, okay…a more realistic way to spend your holidays would be to take a look at some other prequels on the couch. And if that’s not enough, here’s a behind the scenes video look at The Hobbit.
Matt was lucky enough to head to the Star Trek Into Darkness press tour where he got to interview both J.J. Abrams and Benedict Cumberbatch. Ben, Joan and I also discussed the new Star Trek film on our podcast this week, along with AskMen’s top 99 most desirable women (take a look at the gallery…you know, just so you know what we’re talking about). Since we’re on the topic of desirable women,
A major celeb story this week was that insane plot to castrate/kill Justin Bieber…and for something even more disturbing: Avril Lavigne covering Nickelback. OK, one last disturbing item before we move on to TV (I promise): Britney Spears has dominated the search trends for the past 12 years, BUT there might be a reason (or 5), check ‘em out here.
Survivor is winding down (finally) and Joan’s got the latest exit interviews from Abi-Maria and Carter here. Who do you think will win on Sunday night? I got to interview the three original Real Housewives of Vancouver that are returning for a second season this February. If scripted daytime drama is more your speed, we’ve also got a bunch of interviews with the cast of Y&R for were in town for a charity event (here and here). Joan’s also got the latest Glee-cap for you, as well as her best picks for next week which include a Buffy reunion on How I Met Your Mother.
We’ve got two new contest for you music lovers… Here’s your chance to check out Coldplay in New York on New Year’s Eve. The second contest is a little closer to home (well, if you live in Pickering, ON): you could win VIP passes to a meet and greet with Phillip Phillips. Carly Rae Jepsen, who we’re pretty sure will top a number of year-end charts in the coming weeks, spoke to us about her tour and upcoming plans. Bad news for Canadian fans of The Killers…they’ve postponed their Toronto show due to Brandon Flowers’ laryngitis. A reschedule date will be announced soon. The rockers were originally set to hit the stage at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre tonight.
One last thing…the 2013 Golden Globe nominations were announced this week, check them out here. The ceremony will air live on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013 and will be awesomely hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
